Protoje was one of the first of the new reggae artists to hit in Jamaica, and is often credited with setting the Reggae Revival in motion, but he started out in hip-hop and now seamlessly combines the two.
The 33 year old comes from good stock : his mother is Jamaican singer Lorna Bennett, best known from her 1972 rendition of ‘Breakfast In Bed’ and his father’s a former calypso king from the island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Having released his third album ‘Ancient Future’ on Mr Bongo Records last year, Protoje’s received much acclaim worldwide, with singles ‘Who Knows’ featuring Chronixx (21 million+ YouTube hits, 3 million Soundcloud streams and 270k+ Shazams, Radio 1 B-list + Radio 1Xtra A-list), ‘Love Gone Cold’ featuring Sevana (Radio 2 C listed + Radio 1 track of the day) and ‘Answer to your name’ (rinsed across Radio 1, Radio 2, and 1 Xtra).
With a headline US tour in June, Protoje will also play Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and a number of other high profile festivals this year (including Coachella and Canada’s answer to Glastonbury – Pemberton Music Festival in Whistler).
Warner Records will be releasing the ‘Who Knows ShyFX Remix’ soon – so expect big things.
